My family and I were here for dinner on Monday June 3rd. My first impression walking in was “Nice ” Then it went downhill. The first thing I did not like was the FRUIT was very limited. I expecially disliked the sliced apples- They were brown and the pineapple looked soft. Then the bread area was crowded with people waiting for bread to be brought out. Also the chicken soup was very low with no chicken left. Now the Pasta is usually my favorite, but now you get plain pasta and you put sauce on noodles yourself. BOOOO! Thats awefull unless you’re a 5 year old. I also did not like the Round Metal table we were seated at. The chairs were hard and cheap feeling. I could go on, but those are the primary things I found disappointing.
I have been a 20+ year fan of Souplantations. I visit them throughout San Diego, however now I will rush to go to the OLD restaurants that are not remodeled. You guys really messed up a good thing.

I’ve been going to your restaurant since you first opened in Pt Loma and really enjoyed it. I visited you R B restaurant Sun June 9. Liked the store improvements but feel the quality of food has suffered. My three favorites in particular. Blueberry muffins are bigger but alot less berries. Chicken noodle and clam chowder soups were bland. I hope it was just a bad day.

We had dinner on 6-17-2013. i liked the glassware, silverware, and pottery BUT I was disappointed in lack of fruit(the containers for the fruit were too small, the limited sizes of the bakery items ( everything small sizes, no labels on the salads and the female manager was too busy eating macaroni and cheese and hiding behind the soda machine. I went to her and complained that the regular ice teas was weak and tasted sweet, her reply”none of our teas are sweet”. No, I am sorry, let me look into it etc. It will be a long time before I go there again. My husband and I generally eat there a couple times a month. You had a good thing going BEFORE “The Remodel” and the hanging water plants add nothing to the decor.
Hi Barbara – We are so sorry for your poor experience. All the menu items are now labeled (we’re sorry we may have been in transition and left them off as we we’re revamping the place). We appreciate your feedback about the bakery items, we sometimes test new portions to reduce food waste (remember, you can always go back for seconds and thirds!). We will also pass along your feedback about your experience with management as we aim to provide the best possible experience to all of our diners.
We ate at the RB restaurant last night and were very disappointed. What once was a homey and cozy place to go is now cold and sterile. The noise from all the metal items on the salad bar was terrible and the music blasting away was very distracting. The new chairs and tables are obviously made to get you up and out in a hurry and the eating utinsels are heavy and awkward to use. Yes, I noticed the glasses are smaller for drinks and the water ones are worthless. By the way no one could figure out how to use the soda machine so the lines were long. I don’t like the fact you need to reach over half the bread to get what you want…..very unsanitary! And what the heck was with the wall decor of wooden forks and spoons sticking straight out from the wall! The labels on the food were too small and hard to find and read. Was any thought given to the remodel of this restaurant at all? You are in a retirement community and I felt sorry for the people who couldn’t find anything…and there was no one to ask…..and had trouble carrying the heavy trays, etc. I could go on forever how you wrecked the place and my family and I hope you aren’t going to “remodel” Mira Mesa.
Hi Judy – we are so sorry that you are disappointed in our Rancho Bernardo remodel. We wanted our fresh decor to match our fresh menu options. If you ever think there is not enough staff on hand please notify someone immediately as it is our goal to make each dinner comfortable.
Just ate at the RB location after having to suffer through the closure during the renovation. My first thought is that you never should have renovated and left it the way it was. Upon entering my wife and saw the same dual sided salad bar for patrons to pass down on either side, but to our shock all the plates and trays were pushed over to one wall creating a huge amount of congestion right as you walk in. The plates and trays used to be strategically placed so that you could get them and move down either side. Secondly the salad serving bowls are so shallow that there is no way for the one employee to keep up with re-filling the bowls for the customers. In fact none of the food station had deep enough trays to keep enough food ready for all the people in line. Third. there were not enough soup bowels. At one point I counted 23 guests waiting for just one soup bowl. The new drink cup sizes are a joke. I was given a ridiculously small water glass that I had to refill 4 times just to quench my thirst (it was hot day) and the fountain drink cup was smaller to. The renovation must have come with a smaller staff as well. I have been going to this souplantation for years with my family. I am sad to say that with great regret I will have to find another eatery to take my family to in Rancho Bernardo……..

Our new remodel aims to bring our diners a fresh new look, just like our fresh options, as well as cut down on dining waste to remain environmentally friendly. I’m sorry but I have to agree with everyone’s comments. I was very excited about the remodel but once I got inside I was in shock. The first shock was the heavy metal trays. I’m in good shape but I found them way too heavy like something you would find in the military. I get to the salads and the tongs are too small. I can’t grab a decent amount of salad so I have to fight to fill my plate. I move on to the rest of the salad bar and nothing is labeled. My wife and I stared at what appeared to be Mozzarella balls, but no label. I also noticed that the metal trays were scratching the counter giving it an ugly grey color. After paying for the meal they asked us to wait to be seated but there was no sign that said “seat yourself” or “wait to be seated” so people were going around us and finding their own seats. The partitions are gone so people in the salad line look right down on top of you. The soda machine was a joke. I was in line until I got tired of the wait and got lemonade which was way too sweet. The soup bowls don’t have handles anymore and they conduct heat really well. By the time I got back to my seat my soup bowl was really hot. Conversely the ice cream bowl is now metal and conducts the cold really well. Nobody was coming around to pick up used plates so I had an uncomfortable stack by the end of the meal. On top of it all the music was loud and more irritating than soothing. My wife and I just kept asking “What were they thinking? ” It seemed like the idea was to make you so frustrated that you don’t eat as much. I will seek out ANY Souplantation that hasn’t gone through such a remodel. I apologize for the rant, but I feel like I have lost an old friend.

Visited the new “remodeled” Rancho Bernardo location on July 13, 2013:
Soup Plantation was always one of our family favorites until this visit. The “remodel” is a disaster.
1. Wall “art” of wooden forks and planters protrude out of the wall at head level where people are seated. We watched people having to lean forward while eating to avoid being beheaded.
2. Chicken in the “Chicken Soup” is now finely cut so it appears that there is very little chicken in the soup anymore.
3. The “Chicken Wonton Salad” is now chickenless.
4. The breads are now served by laying pieces randomly on a cutting board so the bread is no longer served warm or kept warm.
5. It appeared that the recipe for the blueberry muffins has changed to a very sweet sugary “Hostess” type muffin.
6. The new soup bowls no longer have an adequate handle for carrying the soup back to your table without burning yourself. (handle to size of a thumb with your thumb in the soup is a fail).
7. The staff should be trained not to interrupt ones dinner just to refill the napkins that still have plenty of napkins. This can be done when cleaning the tables. The napkins were filled twice while we were eating like it was some kind of emergency.
8. The interior feels cheap and hard.
We are so sorry for your disappointment in our remodel. Our decor and new menu items were updated to reflect the fresh and innovative menu offerings we strive to provide. We hope on your next dining experience we will be able to impress you.
Hello, while I thought aspects of your remodel looked nice, I have to echo some of the comments above that a lot of the changes are not very practical. The tray is too heavy. The salad bowls do need better handles, the old style worked much better. And the serving utensils were pretty much useless. The tongs could not pick up a muffin, they weren’t wide enough to grab the muffin. And because the tongs were so heavy, if you did not place them back down very carefully, the uneven weight of them could cause them to slip off and fall on the floor. I saw this happen twice in one visit. Also, the serving spoon/area for the salad dressing was not user friendly at all. it was messy and the serving spoon handle was falling back into the dressing.

First time here at this souplantation, it was such a great experience. Clean, food was great, and the service was exceptional. 10/10 would recommend to friends and family!
